The Problem With Knowing Too Much

Most humans in The Kalos Chronicles have one advantage they don't even know they possess.
They can stay away from the Kalos.
They don't know where to find them. They don't know what they're looking for. If something feels wrong, they can leave and never knowingly encounter one again.
But some humans know exactly what the Kalos are.
And some of them have to keep coming back.
Imagine knowing enough to recognize the danger and being unable to protect yourself with distance. Your responsibilities require you to watch, listen, ask questions and occasionally stand much closer than good judgment would recommend.
You know the rules.
You know why they exist.
You also know that none of that makes the person standing across from you any less beautiful.
Knowledge doesn't stop attraction. It doesn't prevent curiosity, and it certainly doesn't prevent desire. It only means you understand what could happen if you stop paying attention to the boundary between you.
Usually, that's manageable.
Until the Kalos notices too.
Perhaps there's a look held slightly too long. A conversation that becomes more personal than it should. A little teasing from someone who knows perfectly well what they're doing.
Nothing has happened.
You're still on your side.
And tomorrow your job may require you to stand in front of them all over again.
The humans who know about the Kalos have been dealing with that problem for a very long time. They learned that knowledge alone isn't enough. When distance isn't possible, you need discipline. You need rules. You need something that anchors you firmly enough to your own world that you remember why the boundary matters.
They have a name.
The Line.
I'm not going to tell you much more about them yet.
Except this.
Knowing where the danger is can help you avoid it.
Knowing where the danger is when you have to keep walking toward it?
That's an entirely different problem.
And eventually, someone on the other side may realize you want to.
