The Kalos Do Not Believe in Blending In

For a species that depends on humanity not discovering what they are, the Kalos have a curious approach to keeping a low profile.

They don't have much interest in it.

A Kalos can be noticed without being discovered, and there is an important difference between the two. They love luxury, beautiful clothes, flowers, jewelry and surroundings chosen with care. At Grey House, presentation matters enough that a tailor is kept on site, available to anyone Grey decides needs to be properly dressed.

Individuality matters just as much. The Kalos aren't interested in looking interchangeable, and one of the ways they distinguish themselves is through signature jewelry. The pieces become associated with the person wearing them, reflecting individual taste rather than simply displaying wealth.

Vesper Regina Grey, Lord Grey's daughter, prefers onyx. Black, hard and sophisticated, it moves easily between masculine and feminine. A smaller piece can be restrained, while a larger piece can command attention without losing the simplicity that makes the stone so versatile. It works with nearly anything Vesper chooses to wear, which suits her particularly well. Her jewelry doesn't need to compete with her. It needs to work for her.

Another Kalos might make an entirely different choice. That's the point.

For all their need for secrecy, the Kalos see no reason to surrender personal expression in order to achieve it. They can wear exceptional clothes, drive expensive cars, fill their homes with flowers and choose jewelry people remember. None of that tells a human what they actually are.

If anything, it gives humans an easier explanation.

It also has a practical advantage.

When a Kalos goes looking for prey, appearance matters. The objective isn't to terrify a human into coming along. It's far easier when the human is impressed, intrigued or attracted enough to go willingly. Beauty gives the Kalos an advantage before a word is spoken, and clothing, jewelry, confidence and the suggestion of wealth can finish making the invitation difficult to resist.

A human sees someone extraordinary and draws an entirely human conclusion. Wealthy. Beautiful. Interesting. Perhaps worth following somewhere more private.

The Kalos are perfectly happy with those conclusions.

Their appearance allows them to accomplish two things at once: attract the humans they want while concealing the reason they want them.

For the Kalos, hiding in plain sight doesn't require becoming invisible. It requires humanity to look directly at them and see exactly what the Kalos intended them to see.

Just never the predator underneath.
